This is a delightfully well-animated Superman cartoon illustrated with an anime aesthetic. Its voice-acting cast is rich and superb, with Jack Quaid starring as the voice of the titular Clark Kent / Superman, and the skillful Alice Lee lending her voice to Lois Lane.
The series delightfully and comically explores the budding relationship of Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Jimmy Olsen as Superman explores and comes to terms with his powers and heritage. The series does an exceptional job giving a fresh twist to all the familiar characters. Clark Kent is just the right combination of awkward and fast-talking, often coming up with blisteringly adorable excuses for disappearing at opportune moments to moonlight as his alter ego.
Lois Lane is characteristically adventurous, spirited, and full of spunk; and there is a sweet, innocent, adolescent attraction between Lois and Clark that buds into a positively heartwarming romance. Lois and Jimmy are both empowered in their respective roles, often playing integral roles in aiding and abetting Superman, either with their investigative skills or other plot-moving abilities.
There is never a dull moment in this series, which is brilliantly scripted with some genuinely funny banter between characters, and some exceptional voice-acting from the talent. The animation is also fluid and modern, with a healthy usage of 3d-cgi that is well-executed. Every character feels unique and distinct from previous iterations in other media canon, and this breathes fresh life into the Superman mythos. Special attention is given to characters like Lex Luthor, and Lois Lane’s father, Amanda Waller, and recurrent antagonists like Slade Wilson. Longtime villains like Brainiac are given new life and character with excellent, modern designs that are a refreshing take, particularly for any older folks who grew up on the 90s animated series.
All-in-all, this is a wonderful reprisal of Superman, alongside the vaunted James Gunn-driven reboot, and I heartily recommend it to newcomers and longtime lovers of Smallville alike. You can’t go wrong with this series, and I excitedly await the next season!
