Joy Ride (2023)

A promotional poster for the movie 'Joy Ride,' featuring four characters sitting on colorful luggage, with a neon sign of the title above them. The backdrop includes a city skyline with lights and cultural elements.

Joy Ride features a lot of edgy, cringe humor and pokes fun at Asian stereotypes. If I were to sum it up in a nutshell, it’s like a Pineapple Express or Harold and Kumar but with Asian women. Still, I don’t think that description does it justice.

This movie featured a lot of interesting twists and turns and few memorable moments with cameos delivered by other male Asian actors. I can certainly see it being funny for a lot of people, but it didn’t quite press the right buttons for me. There was too much energy, too much excitement, and too much overt sexuality without a matching level of headiness for my tastes. Nevertheless, I do feel a lot of people can get a good chuckle out of this, even if it was a but much for me.

The film is an overall good time and gives each of its ensemble cast members a fair share of screen time, dialogue, and plot significance. The pacing is good, with each scene flowing meaningfully into the next. In these regards, I genuinely applaud it, in addition to some genuinely over-the-top, if outright unbelievable moments. The key friendship of Audrey and Lolo take center stage, but not at the cost of Kat and Deadeye, who each deliver their own interesting personas.

Where it fails is in its ending, which feel like it tries to mash too much sentimental ennui in the last thirty minutes or so. While it does wrap up all its loose ends, it feels slightly rushed and not as wholesome or fulfilling overall as its crazy build-up.

Overall, for the right demographic (likely Asian American women) this film is a fun joy-ride, to credit its name – but for a lot of people out there, it’s more a forgettable flick with a few interesting moments.
