(Mostly) Empty Space

Anxiety like sharks in my belly swimming,
I feel like a cup overfilled and brimming.
My brain’s a flurry of thoughts like snow—
Things I think I do and don’t know.
Accumulating, sleeting in a freezing storm;
I wonder if this is the human norm.
Tossing and turning in my bed,
Until a thought like the sun radiates in my head.
Someday I’ll be dead—
What’s the point of all this dread?
Life will happen; this too shall pass.
The bubble that is me will evanesce into eternity,
Or maybe implode in a catastrophic singularity.
It’s mostly empty space permeating reality;
Life’s mostly nothingness with tiny, important bits.
So I think I’ll choose to worry less—
Toss my complaints, my comparisons, no second guess.
Remembering we’re all living in fairy tales,
I’ll write my own story instead:
One where I smile more for those I care for,
Extricate myself from the gravity of the world’s hate,
Take time to cherish how the light illuminates,
Enjoy the freezing cold of a wintry lake,
Bask in the burning warmth of desert heat.
I’ll stop being scared of all that can be
And embrace all that is as meant to be.
I’ll have faith in reality
And surrender my soul to infinity.
I’m going to stop trying to control everything,
And believe in true love instead—
Not the kind where you hold on for dear life,
But the kind where you let go because it’s right.
I’ll feel with my head and think with my heart;
I’ll stop trying to run away,
And live my life like an art.
